Making Up a Failed Class

Evening/Saturday School

King College Prep offers numerous opportunities for remediation, so failing a course should only occur in very rare situations.   Failing classes can result in demotion to a lower grade level, as well as put you in danger of not graduating on time.  The failing grades remain on your transcript, lower your grade point average and just don’t look good to college admission officers.

It is a King College Prep policy that students must make up their failed graduation requirements in Evening, Saturday or Summer school.  Please note:  Evening, Saturday and Summer school is for making up failed classes only!   Students should plan to make up the failed class in the semester immediately following the failure.  It is never a good idea to postpone making up a class.   We encourage parents to be a part of this process, but the major player here must be the student.  It was the student who failed the class and it must be the student who takes responsibility for their education and demonstrates his/her maturity by taking the initiative in this process.

Evening and Saturday school registration takes place twice a year, typically during the first few weeks of first and second semester; however, some schools are registering students now.   Students who need to register for Evening or Saturday school must follow the steps below.

There are no exceptions to this procedure.

1.   Click the following links to review the Evening/Saturday school directory and the Back on Track form.

2.   Use the Evening/Saturday School Directory to complete the Back on Track form.  If you have questions about Evening/Saturday school courses, times etc. you must contact the school yourself.  The contact person and phone number is listed in the Evening/Saturday School Directory.

A few notes about the Back on Track form:

  • Forms must be completed by the student and emailed to the counselor.

  • The form must be 100% complete before the counselor will generate an Evening/Saturday school referral.

  • Allow 2 working days for the counselor to process your request and generate your referral form.

3. Email the completed Back on Track form to your counselor; she will use the information that you provide on the Back on Track form to complete your Evening/Saturday school referral.

4.   Once your Back on Track form has been received by your counselor, and it is 100% complete, she will then complete an Evening/Saturday school referral form that you need to take to the Evening/Saturday school in order to register.

5.   When your referral has been completed, (allow 2 working days for the referral to be prepared) your counselor will send an email informing you that your form is ready for pick up.  An unofficial copy of your transcript will be attached to your referral.  You may pick up completed referrals in the Counseling Suite from Ms. Jones.

6.   Now that you have your referral you need to take it to the Evening/Saturday School during the registration days and times listed on the Evening/Saturday School Directory.  The fee for Evening/Saturday School is typically $25.00 per class and is usually expected at the time of registration.  Contact the school directly if you have any questions about fees.

7.   If you missed the registration deadline, your class is not available at the school you chose, you lost your referral or any other situation that requires the counselor to complete a new referral form you must complete another Back on Track form and follow the procedure listed above.  Students may not see their counselor and have them complete another referral and print another transcript.  The procedure above must be followed, there are no exceptions.

“I don’t have time to follow the procedure” or
“I’m just one person and I just need this one form filled out now, why can’t you just do it for me now???”…

You might be inclined to think or say either of the above statements, but consider this before you do; King College Prep has 3 counselors who have caseloads of approximately 320 students.  In addition, each counselor is responsible for numerous other counseling related duties; therefore, it is just not reasonable to expect the counselors to break protocol for those who refuse to follow policy.

Important Note about Evening/Saturday School:

Each school has their own registration dates, times and deadlines. It is your responsibility to make sure that you meet the deadline.  Classes fill up quickly so the best way to ensure that you get the class you want at the school you want to attend is to start the process immediately.  Complete the Back on Track form, email it to your counselor, retrieve it immediately and go directly to the Evening/Saturday school as soon as their registration period begins.   Programs will not be changed because you missed the Evening/Saturday school registration, even if you are a senior and need the course in order to graduate on time.

AVENTA Online courses:

Information about AVENTA registration will be available in mid-February.  Evening and Saturday classes are the first option for students, as such; no student should wait around hoping to get into an AVENTA class.  As soon as information is available it will be posted on the website.

Summer School

Summer School is another option for students who need to make up failed graduation requirements.  Students who fail a second semester course that is required for graduation should plan to make it up in summer school.  Summer school is offered at King as well as many other Chicago Public Schools.   We do not know what King will be offering for Summer School until very late Spring, and the directory of Summer schools and courses offered is not available until the last few weeks of school.  Therefore, if a course is available in Evening/Saturday School you should take it.  Don’t wait!
