ABOUT KING COLLEGE PREP

FACULTY
King’s faculty are true experts, both in their fields and in the craft of teaching. At King, students have the opportunity to take anatomy and physiology with a former athletic trainer who worked the Atlanta Summer Olympics; learn photography and graphic design from a teacher whose work has been featured in the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Newsweek and in collections at the Art Institute and Museum of Contemporary Photography; and study English and journalism with a 2010 Golden Apple Award winner. Furthermore, our faculty includes several National Board Certified Teachers across multiple departments, a number that grows each year among a faculty who value honing their craft.

In addition, we regularly bring in outside experts to enhance student learning. Whether it’s jazz great Wynton Marsalis performing with our award-winning band, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speechwriter and lawyer Clarence Jones helping students interpret Dr. King’s writings, or journalists and photographers from National Geographic presenting to the student body, our students learn from the very best.

PREPARATION FOR COLLEGE
King students benefit from a rigorous college prep curriculum with honors and advanced placement courses available in all core subject areas. AP courses provide opportunities for college level study. Additional specialty programs offer advanced coursework in Visual & Performing Arts (Band, Dance, Drama, Graphic Design, Photography, Studio Art, Vocal Music), Architecture, Engineering and Computer Science. Our engineering program utilizes a nationally recognized curriculum developed by Project Lead the Way. Our architecture program focuses on the study of residential design and uses a curriculum developed by the Chicago Architecture Foundation and Chicago Public Schools. Each fall, all 9th-11th graders participate in King Goes to College Day, traveling to visit up to 30 college campuses throughout the Midwest. King also maintains college partnerships with several Chicago area schools.

Graduates attend top colleges and universities throughout the country, including:
Carleton College, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Howard University, Morehouse College, Penn State University, Spelman College, Stanford University, Syracuse University, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Chicago, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
