  • KING COLLEGE PREP’S “STRANDS” MODEL: To help students focus their study, King offers “Strands” to its students. “Strands” are similar to high school majors and provide students the opportunity to engage in three or four years of study in a content area in preparation for further study at the college level.

  • Architecture and Engineering
Students that participate in this Strand can choose to focus on either architecture or engineering. Both courses of study are supported with an Art/Drafting class that entering freshmen may choose as an elective. Engineering students will begin taking a sequence of three engineering courses in their sophomore year. These courses are recognized by the Project Lead The Way engineering education program. The first course is an Introduction to Engineering Design. The second course will cover Principles of Engineering, and the final course available to seniors will cover Digital Electronics. Our architectural program focuses on the study of residential design and uses the curriculum developed by The Chicago Architectural Foundation and the Chicago Public Schools. Architecture classes become available to students in their sophomore year.

  • Information Technology
The Information Technology Strand includes a computer science curriculum and focuses on computer programming. While there is a course available to students who want to explore computer software, this strand is designed to prepare students for a college career in which they use programming languages to design computer software, websites, games, etc. Students begin studying computer programming as sophomores.

  • Visual and Performing Arts
Students who choose the Visual Arts component of this strand, embark on a series of classes including commercial photography, graphic design, drawing and painting, and Advanced Placement Studio Art. Freshmen are encouraged to take either Art/Drafting or Introduction to Art if they are interested in starting the more advanced photography, drawing, and graphic design courses in their sophomore year. Students interested in the Performing Arts can choose to concentrate in dance, band, drama or vocal music. A freshman class is offered in each of these areas. Each performing arts area offers four years of course study.

  • College Partnerships and Academic Rigor
All of our Strands are supported by specific college partners who directly influence our curriculum by interacting with our teachers. They also provide extra-curricular activities designed to enhance the learning experiences of our students. We have more than 10 colleges and universities that support our efforts on a daily basis. In addition, we offer many Advanced Placement Classes to provide students the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school.
